Wellbeing

The Causeway Shantymen are not just a gang of salty roustabouts: we’re a well-being organisation which uses music to uplift lives of rurally isolated men in coastal communities through the practise and performance of sea shanties, both in weekly rehearsals and performances for groups with well-being health needs.

Set Sail for Wellness: The Shantymen's Voyage To HealthĀ & Harmony

Established research shows that singing together is a great mental tonic- improving breathing; posture and muscle tension as well as improving mood and memory. The Causeway Shantymen meet weekly and at regular public and private performances, receiving the above benefits, as well as the social aspects of bonding, belonging and having an outlet to engage.

A good crew takes the strain from others when needed, stepping up to back-up the individual as a team when the sailing occasionally gets tough- that's exactly how the Shantymen work! The crew of guys is made up of raconteurs and blaggards from across NI- helping to reduce loneliness and the challenges of rurality by creating a welcoming safe space to sing together as an established wellbeing treatment.
